It is universally
acknowledged that learning is an essential process for entities (living
beings, physical machines or computational programs) that need to carry
out complex tasks or work in evolving environments. Hence, more and more
research is being dedicated to learning and its many aspects.
Most of this
research is tuned to particular points of view: biological, psychological,
educational, mathematical, algorithmic, computational, etc. Nevertheless,
many researchers consider that perspectives coming from other scientific
fields are important, sometimes critical, to produce significant advances
and useful results.
LEARNING'00 is
the second edition (Learning'98 was held on September, 1998) of a workshop
aimed at providing a forum for interdisciplinary study and discussion of
the different aspects of learning: during two days and a half, it will
host invited lectures by well-known experts, oral presentations, poster
sessions, and round tables to discuss how the different approaches can
help one another.
The final goal
of this technical meeting is to create a (series of) network(s) which allow
a fluid interchange of different kinds of know-how to accelerate the progress
along different research conceptions and lines.
Original, unpublished
papers are invited on the following subjects and topics (without excluding
contributions related to additional aspects of learning):
-
I. Natural
& Artificial Learning
Approaches
-
Biological and machine
learning paradigms
-
Biologically inspired
computational models of learning
-
Learning principles
for artificial intelligence: cognitive, psychological and sociological
influences
-
Architectures: NN,
Bayesian, ...
-
II. Mathematical
Issues of Learning
-
Constructing and
validating models and architectures
-
Defining goals and
objectives
-
Training methods
and algorithms
-
Generalization aspects
in the learning processes
-

-
III. Facing the
Main Learning Difficulties
-
Complexity in learning
-
Nonstationary environments:

It is expected
that one conference session will be dedicated to each one of these four
blocks: every session will include an invited lecture plus two or three
oral presentations (20 m) plus around ten poster contributions.
The publication
of a special issue of a technical journal and a book including extended
versions of selected papers is under negotiation. More information to follow
